Up for sale is a 1955 Ford Thunderbird 2 Door Convertible. This, however, is not you average run of the mill restored Thunderbird. The car was bought initially in 1955 it was purchased by the electrical engineer who worked for Howard Hughes . When the man died, his sister inherited the car. She loved the car so much she ran it in the winter with snow tires- until she parked it in 1972. We found the car in her barn in 1994, and proceeded to purchase the car then, at a price of $6,000. The car was in rough shape then, but not to the point where it wasnt fixable. 10 years and a lot of money and time later, the car was finished (2002). The parts and paint alone invested in this car total up to over $45,000, not including the labor invested. All work was performed by me and my uncle (for my father, who owns the car)- we run an automotive garage that has been open since the 50s, and the car was done correct. We have done several restorations, so the car wasnt done in somebodys barn in the middle of nowhere. Everything on the car is period correct to Concours Restoration standards- from the black lacquer paint down to the 6 Volt electrical system in the car. The car came equipped with power steering, power brakes, power windows and power seat. The motor is the original (numbers matching) 292 C.I. Ford V8. The transmission is the original Ford-O-Matic that came in the car. Every piece on this car was carefully pulled apart and either refinished to how it came from the factory, or purchased new. Every nut and bolt used in this restoration is stainless steel. The car has won countless numbers of trophies and shows since the completion of the restoration, including a few Best of Shows and 1st Place at Rhinebeck Antique Auto Show in New York(one of the largest in the Northeast) every year it was entered for show. The car will come with a $5,000 removable hardtop (black) which has been restored, but never put on. The car currently has a black soft top on it. You will be hard pressed to find a cleaner, nicer, and more period correct Thunderbird around. Everything on the car was done (Frame-Off Restoration), and everything was done correct. I have an entire photo album documenting the restoration of this car, but it is not available to be put online because the photos are not digital. No expense was spared on this baby bird, which was part of the reasons the car took so long to complete. Since completion of the cars restoration, it has had less than 1,000 miles put on it (cleaned after every drive). The car is a show car, and it lives inside of a garage with a form fitting Thunderbird Cover. The car was stored there in the winter as well- put on blocks every winter to preserve the period correct bias tires.
